SOLD - Terrace Court

Oil on Canvas. 24" x 36".
This painting is after the photograph by Alec Soth (with permission). I've included his wonderful photograph as a reference here. The photograph is so outstanding as to make it quite difficult to want to reproduce.

Instead of an exact copy or an artistic replica of the photograph, I wanted to paint the parts of this photo the spoke to me. I like the emptiness and mystery of the windows and excitement of the red doors. What wordly pleasures or pains lay just beyond them? The late evening sky giving way to the blackness.

This painting took approximately six months to complete. I took some artistic license with some of the features. I left out some of the background and the most obvious item was the red downspout/drain.
This painting is in the collection of Christopher and Carol Drake.

  1. I am strangely attracted to this picture. I've been to the site a few times and this is where I get stuck. Is this for sale Martin?

Yeah, I think this is a good one too, and I think the mystery of it lies in the fact that it's a human place , but there are no humans shown, and all of that takes place in our minds, as you suggested. Hopper was good at that too.

  4. WOW! What a surprise.

After a long period of time I had thought of how much I liked this painting. I came here to look at it and see if Martin still had it for sale.

I am happy Chris and Carrol enjoy it as much as I do.

For me, the painting reminds me of a time in my life when I lived in hotels and motels on the road. I was very lonely. The painting would of been a constant reminder of the blessings of friends and family I have today.

The painting- I feel I stayed in this motel. :-)

If you EVER want to sell it please contact me.
