This drawing took about one hour to complete. This is after an Alberto Vargas drawing. For those of you who came of age in the late 70's and early 80's, Vargas did the cover of the Cars Candy-O album. Long before the Cars cover Alberto Vargas was creating fantastic pin-ups for Esquire Magazine and later Playboy.

Vargas is probably the most prolific of the Pin-up artists from his era and had a great talent for capturing the female form. I like Vargas' work very much because it doesn't try to be more than it is. Vargas was interested in clean lines, perfect color and composition. 

At any rate, this is my tribute to Vargas. In some ways visual artists are like musical artists. We hone our craft by practicing and, "covering" other great artists. Much as a guitarist might try cover a Dylan tune, I try to cover/copy other artists. I'm not an art snob who thinks I have to be original in everything I do. Look, it's hard to be original and anyone who says it's easy is either a genius or they're lying.

In the end, my work won't be an exact copy of Vargas but in drawing from his work I can learn and perhaps understand his techniques. Just like any artist, I am practicing.
