Anime Drawings

Goku - 9 X 12 Canson Sketch
June 27, 2014

Here are a few anime drawings I've done lately. Most of these are the character, "Goku" from Dragon Ball Z. The other guy with the scar is Kenpachi from the very popular anime series Bleach.

These are done on 9 X 12 Canson Sketch Paper with graphite, ink and Copic markers. These are a blast to draw and just really cool to experiment with. The characters have a lot of energy and I have a deep respect for the illustrators who create them and bring them to life.

One of the fun things to do with these is to try to imagine unique or original action poses or environments. I've had having all sorts of ideas about where to position them and the settings they might be in. So far I've just kept it fairly simple, but I may begin to expand that soon.

My painting has taken a back seat lately and I feel mildly guilty about that. I know that I should be practicing, yet I find myself enjoying drawing and illustrating a lot more lately. Painting also makes me happy, but my struggles with it sometimes wear thin. I think I justify my decisions by looking at my illustrations as paintings with a pencil or marker or watercolor pencil.

I was pretty excited the other day to get an invitation to enter one of my large drawings into a local art show. The drawing is a huge charcoal 22" X 30" of the Stillwater Lift Bridge. The piece is one of my favorites and my wife Susan's as well. It hangs in my living and I'm glad it's going to get a showing. One of the most rewarding things about creating art is sharing it with others.
