Horse - Faber-Castell Pitt Markers |
April 23, 2015
Here are some recent drawings and paintings I've been working on. I should really post things more than once a month, I know. I find lately that I've been posting work more on Facebook than the blog and that should really be the other way around I think.
I do like the immediacy of Facebook for the feedback. I tend to post everything there, good or bad and sort of let the marketplace decide on which pieces are good and which are not, based on likes. Probably not very scientific, but it is at least one measure and it's pretty immediate.
These days, like when I was a kid, I mostly draw and paint to improve my technique and for the sheer enjoyment of it. It's sort of liberating and relaxing not to have to worry so much. I'd be lying if I said I didn't care at all what others think, because I do. I think most Artists do, even if they don't admit.

Sketching in the Badlands - Ink & Watercolor |
One of the things that I've been doing for the past year or so is sketching. I joined the Twin Cities MetroSketchers Group which is a local group of people who get together to sketch in public once a month. Sometimes it's at a museum or local zoo, other times, when weather permits, it's at a park or outdoor venue somewhere.
It's really a fun group of people and a great chance to get out and create art with others. There's no pressure you don't bring with you and the other Artists are all so supportive.
In addition to that, I've been attending a figure and gesture sketching meet up every Sunday night. It lasts for 3 hours and features live models. It's challenging to sketch a variety of poses in a timed fashion. Some poses only last a minute, while others may go as long as a half-hour. Sometime this summer I'll post the best figure sketches from the past year.
